Bill Fisher has been an elementary school teacher in Charles County for nearly 40 years. He currently teaches fifth grade at Dr. Higdon Elementary School. Fisher began his tenure as MSEA’s elected treasurer on September 1, 2011.
Fisher was born, raised, and schooled in central New Jersey. He attended Slippery Rock State College, graduating with a BS degree in Elementary and Special Education.
Fisher was the Coordinator and Regional Director for Destination Imagination (DI)—formerly called the Odyssey of the Mind (OM)—for 20 years in Charles County and served on the State Board for DI and OM for 15 years. DI and OM are international creative problem solving competitions for children from kindergarten through college which are co-sponsored by Charles County Public Schools and the Greater Waldorf Jaycees. Fisher also has been a long-term and successful advocate on numerous education and collective bargaining issues.
He has been a member of the Education Association of Charles County (EACC) since he came to Maryland in 1974. He has served on the association's numerous teacher committees, the EACC Executive Board, and as vice president under three different presidents. He also served as EACC president for three consecutive terms.
At the state level, Fisher was elected and served two terms on the MSEA Board of Directors. He currently chairs the Budget Committee and also serves on the Membership Committee. He has been a delegate to both the MSEA convention and the National Education Association Representative Assembly for more than 30 years.
He has been married to his beautiful and supportive wife, Sheila, for 37 years. She is also a teacher and is an EACC executive board member. The Fishers reside in Colton’s Point in St. Mary’s County.
