Maryland State Education Association Endorses Brian Frosh for Maryland’s Next Attorney General

March 15, 2014, Annapolis, MD: The Maryland State Education Association’s Representative Assembly (RA) voted today to endorse Senator Brian Frosh in the race for Maryland’s next attorney general. Delegates from across the state voted on the endorsement during one of the association’s largest meetings of the year. The vote followed a comprehensive process that included candidate questionnaires and interviews on a wide range of issues affecting Maryland’s public schools and students, as well as remarks before the RA. Eighty-six percent of delegates voted in favor of the endorsement.

“We need a strong attorney general who will fight for Marylanders, social justice, and our public schools,” said MSEA President Betty Weller. “As educators, we count on the attorney general on issues ranging from ensuring that teacher and principal evaluation systems are developed according to Maryland law to standing up for strong labor laws that protect workers’ rights. Brian Frosh will be a strong, capable attorney general who will help make Maryland, our middle class, and our communities stronger.”

“I’m thrilled to receive MSEA’s endorsement,” said Senator Frosh. “During my time serving as a senator, I have valued the insight of MSEA and Maryland’s educators, and I look forward to working with MSEA and its members to win the election and to pursue forward-looking policies as attorney general that will help support our state’s students, educators, and working families.”

On Saturday, MSEA delegates also voted to endorse Peter Franchot in the race for comptroller. At MSEA’s Fall RA in October, delegates voted to endorse Anthony Brown for governor.

MSEA is the 71,000-member Maryland affiliate of the National Education Association (NEA), which represents over 3 million education employees across the country. MSEA is the state’s largest professional employee organization. Members include elementary and secondary teachers, education support professionals, certificated specialists, school administrators, retired educators, higher education faculty, and students preparing to become teachers. MSEA supports 39 local affiliated associations throughout Maryland.
